About CLOC

Mary Shen O’Carroll is Director of Legal Operations, Technology and Strategy team at Google, where she is responsible for overseeing key aspects of financial performance management, outside counsel management and internal operations (IT, knowledge management, training and development, etc.).

Since coming to Google in 2008, Mary has been responsible for developing Google’s Legal Operations organizational structure and centralizing operations for an international department. During her tenure at Google, Mary has been recognized by the American Bar Association as Legal Rebel in 2016, by LegalTech News as Legal Department Operations Director of the Year in 2016, by The Recorder as leading the Legal Operations Department of the Year in 2015, and by ILTA for Innovative Legal Department of the Year in 2015.

Prior to joining Google, Mary served as Profitability Manager for Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe LLP, where she led firm-wide profitability improvement initiatives by advising leadership on ways to monitor and improve practice management, client management and operations. Earlier, Mary was an investment banker working on M&A and private equity deals and a strategic management consultant advising pharma/biotech companies as well as U.S.-China businesses.

Mary is also a passionate leader pushing forward disruptive technology and processes designed to change the future of the legal industry. To support that agenda, she is President of CLOC (Corporate Legal Operations Consortium) whose mission is to help legal operations professionals and other core corporate legal industry players (e.g. tech providers, law firms, LPO’s, law schools, etc.) optimize the legal service delivery models needed to support the needs of small, medium and large legal departments.

Ms. O’Carroll received a BS, Business Administration from University of California, Berkeley, Haas School of Business.

Aine Lyons is VMware’s Vice President and Deputy General Counsel Worldwide Legal Operations and Chief of Staff to VMware’s General Counsel. She is responsible for driving operational excellence through scalable innovation. Aine joined VMware in 2007, initially in senior roles, including leading the EMEA legal team, and founded the legal operations team in 2011. Her efforts have resulted in departmental recognition as winners of the 2018 Financial Times Intelligent Business – Contracting winner; 2016 Financial Times “Most Innovative In-House Legal Team” and as the 2015 ACC Value Champion. Aine is also a thought leader in the legal operations field: a founder’s 50 member of the Corporate Legal Operations Institute (CLOC) in North America and Europe Lead, and a regular speaker on operational topics. Aine serves on the global VMinclusion Council, setting diversity and inclusion strategy for VMware, and in 2014, she earned the CEO’s EPIC2 Achievement Award.

Prior to joining VMware, Aine worked in private practice and then in house as EMEA Legal Counsel at Siebel Systems’ (now Oracle) and as EMEA General Counsel of the APC-MGE a division of the Schneider Group.

Christine Coats is Vice President of Legal Operations at Oracle, reporting directly to Oracle’s Executive Vice President and General Counsel Dorian Daley. Oracle offers a comprehensive and fully integrated stack of cloud applications and platform services.

Before joining Oracle, Coats spent the majority of her nine years at Symantec as its Chief of Staff. In this role, she oversaw the centralized operation of its legal and public relations teams. Coats was also responsible for executing significant expense reductions through preferred outside counsel programs, as well as implementing an e-billing and global enterprise contract management system and a company-wide records retention policy and program.

She currently serves as CFO Ex-officio and board member of Leadership California, a network of accomplished women leaders dedicated to advancing the leadership role of women in California. Coats is also on the leadership team of the CLOC organization performing the CFO role and is a member of the Thomson Reuters Client Advisory Board.

Coats holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

Jamal Stockton is the Head of Legal Innovation and Digital Enablement in the Legal Department at Fidelity Investments. Based in Boston, MA, he is responsible for continuous improvement in the department’s service delivery, and as such sets direction across and collaborates with an international team of IT development teams, operations and eDiscovery staff, legal service providers, contract attorneys and paralegal staff. With an extensive background in engineering and technology, Jamal is charged with identifying and implementing scalable platforms and designing new process and organizational models to improve the speed, accuracy, cost-efficiency, and effectiveness of the Legal Department.

Jamal has over 20 years of experience in process engineering, platform design and implementation, and innovation “evangelism” in the legal, financial services, and manufacturing fields. He has previously worked as an engineer and consultant, including getting his start at GE in the Six Sigma program. He donates his time and expertise to many non-profits, and is particularly passionate about legal service innovation that will advance the cause of equal access to justice.

Jamal holds a Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering Technology from Northeastern University in Boston Massachusetts, along with various accreditations in consulting and management techniques including LEAN, Six Sigma and Strategic Negotiations.

Jason Barnwell is Assistant General Counsel-Legal Business, Operations, and Strategy at Microsoft Corporation. Based in Redmond, WA, he leads Microsoft’s Legal Business, Operations, and Strategy team. His work is focused on delivering operational excellence and insights to Legal Affairs that help Microsoft’s legal professionals offer counsel with exceptional business impact. His team partners with internal and external partners to provide Legal Affairs with strategic planning, law firm engagement, financial management, vendor management, analytics, technology support, alternative legal services, and innovation consulting services.

Jason’s previous roles at Microsoft include leading the Open Source Software practice group and counseling the Cloud and AI Platform Business. Prior to joining Microsoft, he was an associate in the Emerging Companies practice group at Cooley LLP. Before entering law school, he worked as a software engineer developing enterprise software. He earned his B.S. in Mechanical Engineering from MIT and his J.D. from the University of Southern California School of Law. He is passionate about technology and still codes when his work permits it.

Lisa Konie is the Senior Director of Legal Operations at Adobe Systems Incorporated and brings over 20 years of experience working in the high-tech industry. She is responsible for managing the Adobe Legal and Government Relations (LGR) departmental operations, which includes everything from strategic planning and outside counsel relationships, to the LGR interactive website, tool implementation, communications and knowledge management, LGR interns, training and overall cross-departmental issues. Her focus is ensuring departmental effectiveness and efficiency while scaling the department to meet its business needs. Additionally, Ms. Konie leads a team overseeing legal support for all of Adobe’s procurement activities.

Mike Haven is Senior Director, AGC, and Head of Legal Operations at Gap Inc. (NYSE: GPS), a Fortune 200 fashion powerhouse with six of the most recognizable brands in the world. He is on the cutting-edge of legal department management, creating, implementing and developing some of the industry’s most innovative policies, procedures, and tools for better and more efficient client service. Mike is Gap Inc.’s first ever legal operations director, responsible for building organizational and functional maturity in the department from the ground up. He is a tireless advocate for industry progress, frequently serving as a speaker and contributor at CLOC Institutes and other industry events around the world.

Mike joined Gap from NetApp Inc., where he managed legal operations and litigation across the global enterprise. Prior to NetApp, he spent more than a dozen years as outside counsel, most recently as a partner at Global 100 law firm K&L Gates LLP.

Jennifer McCarron currently serves as Director of Legal Operations and Technology at Netflix. In her role she focuses on strategic financial management, technology and innovation, operations, and knowledge management for Netflix’s global legal function.

Before joining Netflix in 2018, Jenn spearheaded legal technology at Spotify in New York where she instituted foundational technologies and processes for contract management, matter management, legal hold management and litigation pipelines. Prior to Spotify, Jenn was a technology program manager in Cisco’s legal operations and technology function, designing the knowledge and information management program and products. Jenn has been involved in CLOC since its inception and has led both the New York and Los Angeles-area geographic chapters.

She holds a B.S. in Business Administration, a B.A. in Economics as well as a Masters in Social Work from the State University of New York at Albany.
